Pay packet vs tax time
Your employer withholds tax from every pay using the ATO's withholding formulas (Schedule 1). Those formulas already include the Medicare levy and the low income tax offset. Your real tax for the year is only worked out when you lodge your return, and it can differ: the $1,000 standard deduction for work-related expenses (from 2026–27), the Medicare levy surcharge and your HELP repayment are settled at tax time. WagePrism shows both, so you can see the take-home in each pay and the likely refund or bill.
Worked example: $100,000 a year
- $18,200 to $45,000 at 15%: $4,020.00
- $45,000 to $100,000 at 30%: $16,500.00
- Income tax: $20,520.00 (marginal rate 30%).
- Medicare levy: $100,000 × 2% = $2,000.00.
- Take-home over the year: $77,480.00. Each fortnight, payroll withholds $868, leaving $2,978.15 in your account.
- Your employer also pays $12,000 super on top.
Common questions
Is super taken out of my pay?
No, unless your salary is quoted as a package "including super". The super guarantee (12%) is paid by your employer on top of your salary. Tick "Amount includes super" if your offer is a package.
Should I claim the tax-free threshold?
Usually from one employer only, normally the one that pays you most. If you claim it from two jobs, too little tax is withheld and you may get a bill at tax time.
Is my salary stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to us.
