How your take-home pay is worked out
- Income tax. 20% up to your standard rate band (€44,000 if single), 40% above, minus your tax credits (personal €2,000 and employee €2,000 for a single employee). See tax bands and credits.
- USC. 0.5%, 2%, 3%, 8% in bands, on all income once it is over €13,000. See USC rates.
- PRSI. 4.2% until 30 September, then 4.35% from 1 October, on all pay once you earn over €352 a week. See PRSI.
- Pension contributions reduce income tax only. Auto-enrolment contributions come out after tax.
Worked example: €50,000, single
- Income tax: €44,000 × 20% + €6,000 × 40% − €4,000 credits = €7,200.00.
- USC: €1,032.82. PRSI: €2,118.61.
- Take-home: €39,648.57 a year, €3,304.05 a month.
Common questions
Why might my payslip differ?
Payroll uses the tax credits and rate band on your Revenue Payroll Notification and works cumulatively through the year. Bonuses, benefits in kind, a second job or emergency tax all change the result. This calculator assumes a steady salary for the whole year from one job.
What about Budget 2027?
Choose "2027 (Budget preview)" as the tax year, or see the Budget 2027 calculator. The figures apply once the Finance (No. 2) Bill 2026 is passed.
Is my salary stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser.
